The Kaminohara Hachiman-gu Toriou Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at Kaminohara Hachiman-gu in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, on the first Day of the Rabbit in December. The origins of this festival date back to the Nanboku-cho period. It is said to have begun as a "fire training" session performed by the warrior Kikuchi Takeshige, a general of the Southern Court, to rebuild his strength after a defeat. This dynamic event is a profound way to experience the history and warrior spirit of the region.
The greatest highlight is the intense "battle" that unfolds amidst a flurry of flying sparks. The center of the festival is the "Goku-san," which are rice balls made from steamed glutinous rice. Local parishioners engage in a fierce struggle to claim these rice balls. The sight of the attackers fighting to seize the Goku-san amidst the dancing flames of torches is an overwhelming and breathtaking spectacle. It offers a true taste of the essence of traditional Japanese fire festivals rooted in deep historical context.
