Event Overview

The Tonami Yotaka Matsuri is a traditional harvest festival deeply rooted in the history of the former Demachi district in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture. Dating back to the Taisho era, this ritual is held to pray for a bountiful harvest and prosperity. The streets come alive with 'Yotaka Andon'—massive, illuminated lanterns made of bamboo and traditional Japanese paper, standing approximately 6 meters tall, casting a brilliant glow over the night sky.

The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Tsuki合わせ' (collision), a high-energy ritual that defines the event. This 'Kenka Mats de' (fighting festival) style stems from historical-era tensions over narrow streets, resulting in a thrilling spectacle where two massive lanterns forcefully push and collide against one another. The sight of these giant structures clashing is truly overwhelming. Additionally, the spirited shouts and rhythmic calls from the leaders (Wakagashira) create an electric atmosphere that draws the entire crowd into a shared sense of excitement.

On the first night, you can also enjoy the 'Andon Contest,' where the craftsmanship and beauty of the various lanterns are showcased.

Schedule

The festival takes place over two intense nights.

• *Day 1**: From around 19:00, the Yotaka Andons are paraded through Honmachi Grand Street. This is followed by the 'Andon Contest' to judge the beauty of the lanterns.
• *Day 2**: The parade begins around 19:00, leading to the grand climax, the 'Tsuki合わせ' (collision), starting around 20:45. The collisions take place at two main locations: in front of Hokuriku Bank Tonami Branch and in front of Toyama Daiichi Bank Tonami Branch.
