Event Overview

Tokushima Hyotanjima Suitosai is a celebration designed to help you rediscover the beauty of the Shinmachi River in the heart of Tokushima City. This unique festival was born from the fusion of the former "Hyotanjima Expo" and the "Tokushima Suitosai" concept. It is a wonderful blend of water and culture, featuring traditional Japanese indigo dyeing (Aizome), various water-based activities, and a breathtaking fireworks display that lights up the night sky.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The greatest charm of this festival is the diverse range of activities utilizing the natural setting of the Shinmachi River. From water athletics and large-scale water sliders to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) and kayaking, there is something for everyone from children to adults. You can also participate in workshops to try traditional Japanese indigo dyeing. As night falls, approximately 2,000 fireworks will illuminate the sky, creating a magical atmosphere alongside live music concerts.

Schedule

This event is typically held over three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) in mid-July. Please note that specific dates may vary each year, so we recommend checking the official website for the most current information. The festival is structured so you can enjoy water-based activities during the day and transition into a night of music and fireworks.

Venue & Access

The main venue is the area around Aibahama Park in Tokushima City. The location is extremely convenient, situated just a 5-minute walk from JR Tokushima Station. Because it is so close to the station, you can easily access the festival using public transportation.

Tips for Participation

If you plan to enjoy the water activities like the water athletics or sliders, we recommend wearing clothes that can get wet and bringing a change of clothes. Since the availability of workshops like SUP, kayaking, or indigo dyeing depends on booth schedules and registration, arriving early is highly recommended. There will also be about 30 food stalls, so come hungry to enjoy the local flavors of Tokushima.

What to Bring & Etiquette

For those participating in water-based activities, please wear comfortable clothing that is okay to get wet. We highly recommend bringing a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to use the water sliders or athletics. Please check the official website regarding payment methods for food stalls and the availability of English-language support, as these can vary depending on the day's operations.
