The Techikara Fire Festival is a historic traditional fire festival held at Techikara Shrine in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture. With a history dating back to the 1760s (Meiwa era), this event is officially designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture. It is a high-octane celebration where the intense heat of falling sparks, the roar of firecrackers, and the raw energy of men carrying portable shrines create a truly dynamic spectacle.
The absolute highlight is the lighting of the massive 20m tall 'Goshinto' (sacred lanterns) followed by the spectacular 'Waterfall Fireworks.' Watch in awe as men in traditional attire carry shrines adorned with fireworks through a rain of sparks. The festival reaches its peak with various fire-based performances, including hand-held firework displays and mountain burning rituals. It is a sensory-driven experience that combines visual grandeur with the thunderous sound of firecrackers and intense heat.
The main festival is held annually on the second Saturday of April. In 2027, it is scheduled for April 10. Additionally, a summer-themed version of the event is sometimes held at Nagara River Park in August for tourism and reconstruction purposes.
