The Takaoka Goshayama Festival is a historic spring ritual held annually on May 1st at the Takaoka Sekino Shrine in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the oldest and most significant float festivals in the region. Seven magnificent floats, known as 'Goshayama,' parade through the old streets of Tkaoka accompanied by elegant traditional music. This event is designated as both a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property and an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and is further recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it a highly prestigious cultural event.
The main attraction is the sight of the 'Goshayama' floats, which reflect the opulent Azuchi-Momoyama period culture. These 'moving cultural assets' feature exquisite metalwork by master craftsmen of the Edo period, stunning lacquerware, and intricate carvings. Seeing these colorful floats pass through the traditional kura-zukuri (storehouse-style) streets of Takaoka is a breathtaking experience.
On April 30th, the 'Yoimatsuri' (Eve Festival) offers a magical atmosphere as the floats are illuminated, creating a dreamlike scene in the night streets. This is the perfect time to admire the fine details of the floats up close. Additionally, the 'Gentayu Shishi' lion dance performed by the Sakashita district is a must-see.

The main parade begins in earnest on the morning of May 1st. Each district brings out its float at a specific time to parade through the old town. If you are interested in the intricate decorations and historical background, we recommend visiting during the Yoimatsuri on the evening of April 30th to see the illuminated floats.
