The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo's most iconic summer events, held along the Sumida River near Asakusa (Taito Ward) and Mukojima (Sumida Ward). Rooted in the historical 'Kawabi-raki' tradition from the Edo period, this festival is held every July. Enjoy a grand scale of fireworks set against the beautiful scenery of the Sumida River.
The main attraction is the sheer scale of the display, with about 20,000 fireworks launched from two different locations. You can experience powerful performances from both the first and second venues. Enjoy the exquisite artistry of traditional Japanese fireworks, including 'Warimono' (spherical fireworks that bloom like chrysanthemums) and 'Pokamono' (fireworks that release stars and sparks). The event often features a fireworks competition, showcasing the highest level of craftsmanship.
The event takes place on July 25th. The fireworks are scheduled to start at 7:00 PM at the first venue and 7:30 PM at the second venue. The display is expected to conclude around 8:30 PM at both locations. Please note that the event may be canceled due to severe weather like typhoons, and there is no official postponement date, so we recommend checking the latest updates in advance.
The event is split into two main areas: the First Venue (below Shirahige Bridge, upstream from Kotowari Bridge) and the Second Venue (below Komagata Bridge, upstream from Umayabashi Bridge).
Traffic restrictions will be in place around the venues. Specifically, road access may be restricted between 6:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Using public transportation is highly recommended.
Since fireworks are launched over the river, viewing is often done while walking along bridges or nearby streets. Designated seating is limited, so most people watch while moving around. Expect heavy crowds and plan your movements with plenty of time to spare.
