The Spring Annual Festival is one of the most prestigious ceremonies held at Yasukuni Shrine. This highly formal ritual marks the arrival of spring with profound spiritual significance. Throughout the festival, a series of sacred rites are performed, including the purification rituals (Kiyoharai) and the major ceremonial days. A highlight of the event is the presence of the Imperial Messenger during the main ceremony, where offerings are presented in a solemn atmosphere dedicated to prayers for peace and stability.
The festival offers a unique blend of sacred rituals and vibrant cultural performances.
First, visitors can experience the power of Japanese Sumo at the shrine's sumo ring, where professional wrestlers perform 'Hono Daizumo' (dedicatory sumo). This is a rare chance to see the strength and tradition of the sport up close. Additionally, the shrine's Noh stage hosts a variety of 'Hono Geino' (dedicatory performing arts), including Japanese classical dance, martial arts demonstrations, storytelling (Kodan), and traditional music, showcasing the pinnacle of Japanese artistry.
Furthermore, the 'Special Ikebana Exhibition' at the Haiden (worship hall) showcases the elegance of Japanese floral art. Approximately 30 exquisite arrangements by master practitioners will be on display, blending natural vitality with refined aesthetics. This creates a breathtaking space where sacred ritual meets artistic beauty, offering a quintessential seasonal experience of Japan.

The event takes place within the grounds of Yasukuni Shrine. Specific ceremonies and performances are held at designated locations such as the Sumo Ring, the Noh Stage, and the Haiden area.
For those wishing to participate in the 'Formal Worship' (Seishiki Sanpai) at the main sanctuary, you must apply at the Sanjun-den within the designated reception hours:
General visitors may freely visit the Haiden (worship hall) during the festival period within the standard shrine hours (06:00 to 20:00).
