At Kashiigu Shrine, the 'Shikota Grand Festival' is held, a celebration steeped in history and tradition. This is a significant ritual to pray for regional peace and prosperity at the highly prestigious Kashiigu Shrine, which honors the ancestors of the Imperial Family. The highlight is 'Yabusame' (horseback archery), a traditional skill where riders shoot arrows at targets while galloping. This display of precision and speed offers a powerful and sacred atmosphere. Set within the serene surroundings of the 'Shrine of Couples,' this festival allows visitors to feel the profound depth of Japanese spiritual culture.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the 'Yabusame Ritual.' After receiving a purification ceremony at the shrine, three archers ride horses to the Kashiigu grounds to pray for national peace and a bountiful harvest. Watching them strike targets in rapid succession is the pinnacle of traditional performing arts. Additionally, the main shrine ceremonies feature 'Fumuka' (ritual dancing), 'Shishiragaku' (lion dance), and the demonstration of the Yagyu Shinryu martial arts style, offering a majestic fusion of martial arts and music. There is also a special opportunity to receive an 'Atari-mato' (a target hit by an arrow), which is considered a lucky charm for improving success and good fortune.

The event takes place within the Kashiigu Shrine precincts and the surrounding grounds. The sacred procession route (Yabusame Sanshin) begins at the shrine office, winding through historical landscapes near ponds and rivers before reaching the main grounds. The vast shrine grounds harmonize historic architecture with natural beauty, allowing you to enjoy the changing atmosphere of the shrine as the festival progresses.
The distribution of 'Atari-mato' (hit targets) is extremely popular and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. These targets are considered highly auspicious for success and protection. While applications are handled at the shrine office, the number available depends on the number of targets actually hit during the ritual, so we recommend checking early. Special amulets (Omamori) are also available during the festival to commemorate your visit.
As this is a formal sacred ritual, please dress modestly and respectfully. A 'Hatsuo-ryo' (offering fee) is required for the Atarimato or special amulets. The fee for an Atarimato is 5,000 JPY, and the fee for a special amulet is 1,000 JPY. These are processed at the shrine office.
