The Shonai Kagura Festival is a vibrant community event held annually on November 3rd (Culture Day) in Shonai Town, Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. The highlight is the 'Shonai Kagura,' a precious intangible folk cultural asset designated by Yufu City and recognized as an 'Oita Heritage' site. This traditional performance art is a profound cultural experience. Alongside the dance, the 'Shonai Town Hometown Festival' is held simultaneously, offering a wonderful way to enjoy both traditional performing arts and the local culinary specialties of the region.
The main attraction is the breathtaking Kagura dance performed by local troupes. Dressed in elaborate traditional costumes, performers move to the rhythmic sounds of drums, flutes, and cymbals, creating a powerful and immersive atmosphere. The repertoire includes about 20 different dances, such as 'Orochi Taiji' (The Great Serpent Slayer). It is truly special to see people of all ages, from local schoolchildren to high schoolers, participating in this tradition. You can also enjoy a variety of local specialties and seasonal dishes available at the venue.
The festival is held every year on November 3rd (Culture Day).
The event takes place at Shonai General Sports Park in Shonai Town, Yufu City.
The Kagura performances take place at an outdoor Kagura-den (a traditional stage structure). Since the performances run from morning until evening, we recommend arriving early to ensure you don't miss your favorite dance. Additionally, since the Hometown Festival features many food stalls, it is best to come with an appetite to enjoy the local gourmet delights.
