Shiokake Matsuri Festival

Event Overview

Shiokake Matsuri is a traditional festival with over 800 years of history, held around Wagu Fishing Port in Shima, Mie Prefecture. The festival celebrates the annual return of the sea goddess, Ichikishimajima-no-mikoto, from the offshore Oshima Island to Yakumo Shrine, praying for maritime safety and bountiful catches. From the sacred morning rituals to the high-energy seawater battles of the afternoon and the dazzling fireworks at night, this is one of Japan's most dynamic summer festivals that connects visitors to the spirit of the sea.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the "Shiokake Kassen" (Seawater Battle). Once the sacred rituals conclude and all boats return to Wagu Fishing Port, participants use buckets and hoses to splash seawater wildly at one another. Spectators may also get soaked! Local legend says getting splashed by this seawater prevents catching a cold, making it a high-energy, communal experience.

As the festival reaches its climax, approximately 600 fireworks will illuminate the night sky and sea. You can also enjoy the "Shiokake Natsu Matsuri" (Summer Night Festival) the evening before, which features the traditional "Kemokaburi" smoke ritual to pray for good health and well-being.

Schedule

The festivities span from the eve of the festival to the main event. In 2027, the main event is scheduled for June 1st.

• *Eve Festival (Shiokake Summer Night Festival)**: Starts around 17:00. The "Kemokaburi" ritual takes place around 18:30.
• *Main Festival**: 08:00–21:00 (Includes sacred rituals, procession, seawater battle, and fireworks).
• *Fireworks Display**: Starts around 20:45.

Venue & Access

The event takes place around Wagu Fishing Port and Wagu Oshima Island.

• *By Public Transport**: From Kintetsu "Ugapata Station," take the Sanco Bus (bound for Goza) for approx. 47 minutes, get off at "Wagu" bus stop, then walk for about 3 minutes.
• *By Boat**: Use the Ago Bay regular boat from Keshima Port, disembark at Wagu Port, and walk for about 20 minutes.
• *By Car**: Approximately 45 minutes via Route 167/260 from the Shiraki IC on the Second Ise Road.

Tips for Participation

During the seawater battle, expect to get wet from large amounts of seawater. We recommend preparing to get soaked to fully immerse yourself in the excitement. Also, keep an eye on the temperature change at night to stay comfortable during the fireworks.

What to Bring & Etiquette

• *Clothing**: Since you will likely get wet during the seawater battle, wear clothes that can get wet or quick-drying fabrics. A light jacket is also useful for the evening fireworks.
• *Essentials**: It is very useful to bring a change of clothes and a towel.
