The Shinmei Fireworks Festival is a major annual event held on August 7th in Ichikawamisato, Yamanashi Prefecture. This region has a long history as a center for traditional Japanese paper production and is also celebrated as a historic 'fireworks town.' During the Edo period, the area's fireworks-making prowess was so renowned that it was once considered one of the top three regions for fireworks in Japan. Today, the festival has been revived as one of the largest-scale events in Yamanashi, offering a spectacular night that symbolizes the region's deep-rooted traditions and craftsmanship.
The main highlight is the overwhelming sight of over 20,000 fireworks filling the night sky. Building on the sophisticated fireworks-making history of the Edo period, the modern display uses advanced technology to create a dynamic and breathtaking experience. This festival has even garnered international attention; notably, the Ambassador of Oman once visited and expressed great admiration for the display's beauty. This event is scheduled for August 7, 2026. While the date was previously held on July 20 in the past, August 7th is now firmly established as the 'Fireworks Day' for this celebration. Although the event saw cancellations or scale reductions in 2020 and 2021, a grand-scale celebration is planned for 2026.
The venue is the riverbed area located approximately a 10-minute walk from JR Ichikawa-Daimon Station.
