Shinane Matsuri is one of the three major festivals of Tosa, held annually at Tosa Shrine (the most important shrine in Kochi) in Kochi City. Known affectionately as 'Shinane-sama,' this festival marks the end of summer and has been cherished by the local community for generations. It is a profound cultural event where ancient Shinto rituals and local traditions blend to create a deeply moving atmosphere.
The most striking feature of this festival is the 'Otaimatsu' ritual. During this sacred ceremony, participants bring torches to the bonfire set before the shrine's main hall, where the tips are slightly charred by the flames. It is believed that these 'charred torches' possess mystical powers to ward off evil and bring protection to the family. This is a rare opportunity to witness a truly spiritual and ancient tradition.
On the evening of August 24th, the approach to the shrine transforms into a lively festival ground with numerous food stalls and night shops. The 'Imibi Festival,' where the sacred bonfire is lit in the evening, creates a solemn and mystical ambiance that lasts until the following day's rituals.
The festival takes place over two days on August 24th and 25th.
