The Shimoda Taiko Festival is the annual grand festival of Shimoda Hachiman Shrine, located in the heart of Shimoda City, Shizuoka. With a rich history spanning approximately 400 years, the festival's origins trace back to the ceremonial drums played during the entrance of the Tokugawa clan into Osaka Castle. This high-energy event takes place over two days, August 14th and 15th, as portable shrines (mikoshi) and ceremonial floats (taikodai) parade through the streets, filling the entire town with excitement.
The absolute highlight of this festival is the "Taiko Bridge" (Taiko-bashi), a breathtaking performance where ceremonial tools are linked together to form a magnificent arch. This climax of the festival is sure to raise the crowd's energy to its peak. As evening approaches, the streets come alive with the sight of ornate "Taikodai" floats adorned with glowing lanterns, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional music. On the night of the 14th, approximately 560 fireworks will be launched near the Takegahama reclaimed land, creating a magical spectacle where the booming drums and colorful fireworks harmonize perfectly.
The main venue is Shimoda Hachiman Shrine, which is easily accessible from Izukyu-Shimoda Station.

The festival route and the specific location of the Taiko Bridge may change annually. We recommend checking the official Shimoda City Tourism Association website for the latest parade maps. For the best view of the fireworks on the 14th, the Okawabata Street area is highly recommended.
