The Shimanto City Festival Summer Fireworks Display is the grand finale of the Shimanto City Festival, one of the most iconic summer events in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. This celebration marks the arrival of summer in the historic Nakamura district with a magnificent production where music and fireworks perform in perfect harmony. The sight of colorful fireworks reflecting on the surface of the Shimanto River—often called the last clear stream in Japan—is a truly elegant and unforgettable experience.
The main attraction is the synchronized performance of music and fireworks over the Shimanto River. The light from the bursts reflects off the water, creating a dreamlike, ethereal atmosphere. Before the main fireworks display, you can enjoy local cultural programs, including dance performances and brass band music by local high school students, as well as the award ceremony for the 'Nakamura Dance and Shimanto Lantern Parade.'
The event is typically held in late August. The following is the tentative schedule:
The venue is the Shimanto River Festival Plaza (riverbank near the Akatetsu Bridge).
This event is supported by the local community. By purchasing a 'Lucky Draw Sponsored Ticket' in advance, you can support the festival and participate in the exciting lottery. These tickets are available at the Shimanto City Tourism Association and 'Michi-no-Eki Yote Nishitosa.'
