The Sendai Tanabata Festival is one of Japan's most iconic traditional celebrations, held primarily in the shopping arcades of central Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. As one of the three great festivals of the Tohoku region, it attracts many visitors every year. The highlight is the magnificent 'Tanabata decorations' made of washi paper, which serve as a beautiful symbol of summer in Sendai. This festival is not just a seasonal event but a vital part of the local cultural heritage.
The greatest charm lies in the grand decorations suspended from the ceilings of the shopping arcades. These 'Seven Decorations' consist of items like paper strips, clothing, cranes, pouches, nets, and large streamers, each carrying a special wish. The delicate designs utilizing the texture of traditional Japanese paper are truly captivating. In some areas, you may even see traditional mechanical displays known as 'Karakuri Tanabata,' adding an extra layer of historical charm to your walk.
The festival is typically held over three days, with August 7th as the central date (usually from August 6th to August 8th). In some years, the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival may also be held on the eve of the main event, August 5th. The festival always takes place in early August.
The main venue is the shopping arcades in central Sendai, such as Ichibancho and Chuo-dori. Access to the city center via train is highly convenient.
