The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival is a premier large-scale fireworks event held in the heart of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Originating in 1970 as the eve of the 'Sendai Tanabata Festival,' this celebration boasts over 50 years of history. It is now renowned as a massive urban fireworks display, launching approximately 16,000 shells. The 2026 theme, 'HOPE — Flowers of the Future Blooming Together,' reflects the resilience and spirit of Sendai, casting the city's wishes and hopes into the night sky through every burst of light. It is a vital cultural event that signals the true beginning of summer in the region.
The greatest charm lies in the intense contrast between the everyday urban scenery of central Sendai and the overwhelming light filling the sky. The display is a rare 'urban-style' show where fireworks interact with the silhouettes of buildings, the surface of the Hirose River, and the greenery of Aoba Mountain Park. With about 16,000 shells launched over 60 minutes, the changing perspectives of the light are truly breathtaking. As the opening ceremony for the following day's Sendai Tanabata Festival, the entire city is filled with a unique sense of excitement and anticipation.
The event will be held on August 5, 2026. The fireworks are scheduled to launch from 19:30 to 20:30 (approximately 60 minutes). Please note that the event will proceed in light rain, but may be canceled in the event of severe weather.
The venue spans the area around Aoba Mountain Park, the Hirose River banks, and the surrounding districts in Aoba Ward, Sendai. There are two types of viewing areas:
While the venue is within walking distance of various stations on the Tozai Line, we highly recommend using public transportation due to extreme congestion on the day.
This is a massive event attracting approximately 450,000 visitors annually. Because it is difficult to secure a spot in the free viewing areas, we recommend considering paid seating in advance for a guaranteed view. Since the display is integrated with the city's architecture, choosing a vantage point that highlights the interaction between the fireworks and the buildings will enhance your experience.
As this is a summer night event, please prepare for the heat and bring insect repellent. Please be mindful of the crowds and the noise/smoke from the fireworks. For ticket purchases and specific seat details, please check the official website in advance. Information regarding ticket sales and details is updated regularly on the official site.
