Senami Grand Festival

Event Overview

The Senami Grand Festival is one of the three major festivals of Murakami City, held at the historic Senami Shrine. This shrine, boasting over 1,200 years of history, is dedicated to Ukemochi-no-kami, the deity of food. Reflecting the heritage of Senami as a once-prosperous port town, the festival features the 'Oshagiri'—magnificent, two-wheeled floats that weave through the streets amidst a sea of local energy and tradition.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the dynamic movement of the 'Oshagiri' floats. Unlike standard four-wheeled floats, these two-wheeled structures are designed for agility, allowing them to navigate steep slopes and narrow streets with incredible speed. The most thrilling moment is watching the pullers chant 'Kiyari-uta' (traditional work songs) while striking bells and drums as they charge up the hills.

Each of the five local neighborhoods features its own unique float (Hamacho, Nakamachi, Shindencho, Kamicho, and Gakkocho). For instance, the Hamacho float is adorned with the 'Ofune-sama' (Kibi Maru), symbolizing the former prosperity of the port. You can also witness the Shindencho float moving to the rhythm of traditional Bon dances, offering a unique glimpse into the local festive spirit.

Eve Festival

Starting on the afternoon of September 3, the Oshagiri floats begin their ceremonial procession through the various neighborhoods.

Main Festival (September 4)

• *Around 04:00**: The 'Saki-daiko' begins, signaling the start of the festival with rhythmic drumming throughout the town.
• *Around 06:00**: The Oshagiri float processions begin in each neighborhood.
• *Around 09:00**: All floats gather in front of Senami Shrine for the sacred ritual to transfer the deity to the portable shrine.
• *Around 10:00**: The grand 'Togyo' procession begins, led by the Mikoshi and followed by the five majestic Oshagiri floats.
• *Around 14:00**: The intense 'Kiyari-uta' chanting and drum beats intensify as the floats charge up the slopes near Yokomachi.
• *Around 20:00**: The climax of the festival. The crowds gather at the foot of the slope in front of Senami Shrine (Hamacho area) to witness the high-energy ascent accompanied by thunderous drums and chants.
