Satsumasendai Hanya Matsuri is a deeply rooted traditional festival held in the heart of Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The event features a diverse program including street performances and the 'Satsumasendai Rekishi Emaki' procession, which showcases the region's rich history. It is a highly colorful and energetic event where you can witness performers in traditional attire and the striking presence of samurai figures.
The greatest charm of this festival is the breathtaking performance that fills the entire town with excitement. A must-see is the grand parade featuring musical troupes and deities, followed by the 'Sichi Emaki' procession that brings history to life. The climax of the festival is the 'Hanya So-odori' dance, a high-energy moment where the distinction between performers and spectators disappears in a shared sense of euphoria. This is a rare opportunity to see historical costumes and samurai aesthetics up close.
The festival is typically held in early November. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.
