Event Overview

The Otome Pass Festival is a traditional event dedicated to the memory of the many Christian martyrs who maintained their faith in this region during the early Meiji era. This period followed a time of intense religious suppression, and the festival honors those who remained steadfast in their beliefs. Held annually on May 3rd, the event centers around the Otome Pass Maria Chapel near the Tsuwano Catholic Church, offering a profound connection to the intersection of history and faith.

Highlights & Experience

The most significant highlight is the "Pilgrimage Procession," where devotees walk in a solemn line carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary. This procession travels approximately 2 kilometers from the Tsuwano Catholic Church toward the Otome Pass, creating a deeply moving and sacred atmosphere. At noon, a majestic "Outdoor Mass" is held at Otome Pass. The echoes of beautiful hymns dedicated to the martyrs provide a sense of spiritual peace to all visitors. With the backdrop of a chapel featuring stunning stained glass, this is a rare opportunity to touch the history of Japan's "Hidden Christians."

The festival takes place every year on May 3rd. The main schedule is as follows:

• *10:15—**: Opening & Virgin Mary Procession (Starting from Tsuwano Catholic Church toward Otome Pass)
• *12:00—**: Outdoor Mass (Held at Otome Pass, presided over by Bishop Andrea Lembo)

Venue & Access

The Otome Pass Maria Chapel is located in a historic mountain setting, accessible from Tsuwano Station.

• Approximately 15–20 minutes walk from JR Tsuwano Station.
• There is no dedicated parking for the general public near the chapel. Please use nearby paid parking lots.
