Oshiroi Matsuri is a highly unique traditional ritual held at Oyama-mi Jinja in Haki Oyama, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Based on the ancient legend that the 'Mountain God' is a female deity, this festival involves the ritual of 'applying makeup' to express gratitude for the new harvest and pray for prosperity in the coming year. A distinctive custom involves applying 'shitogi'—a paste made by mixing ground new rice with water—onto the faces of participants, creating a vibrant and spirited atmosphere of community devotion.
The most breathtaking moment is the 'Oshiroi-nuri' (powder application) at the climax of the festival. After the priest performs purification and recites sacred prayers, local parishioners use large bowls of white 'shitogi' to apply the paste to the priest's face.
