Omama Gion Festival

Event Overview

The Omama Gion Festival is a traditional Gion festival with a 396-year history, held in Omama, Midori City, Gunma Prefecture. As one of the three great Gion festivals of the Joshu region, it has long been preserved as a ritual to pray for the prevention of epidemics. Held annually from August 1st to 3rd, the festival features seven magnificent floats parading through the Honmachi district of Omama, accompanied by traditional festival music. Venue & Access

The main venue is the Honmachi district, spanning from 1-chome to 7-chome in Omama.

While parking is available near the venue, it is highly recommended to use public transportation due to expected heavy crowds.

Tips for Visitors

For the best experience, watch the procession from the Honmachi street area to feel the full energy of the floats. Many events take place into the evening, and the lively night atmosphere is a major part of the charm. Since the program varies significantly each day (parades, mikoshi, and float processions), we recommend checking the schedule in advance to see the specific event you wish to experience.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is a summer event, please prepare for the heat by bringing a hat, a fan, and plenty of water for hydration.
