The Ogiyama Fire Festival is a traditional event held at Mt. Ohira (Ogiyama) in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, serving as a symbol of spring in the region. Established in 1976, this ritual is a way to announce the arrival of spring to the gods of the hot springs, offering the new growth of plants through the traditional practice of controlled burning. As part of the Beppu Onsen Matsuri, the sight of the massive 'Fire Fan' glowing against the dark mountainside is a beloved seasonal tradition.
The main highlight is the colossal fan-shaped flame that emerges from the darkness. As the fire spreads rapidly through the dried grass, it paints the entire mountainside in a brilliant glow, creating a majestic and otherworldly atmosphere. The contrast between the burning flames and the beautiful magic hour sky during twilight is a unique experience that can only be found here.
The festival is scheduled for April 2, 2027. The lighting of the fire is expected to begin around 18:30. Please note that since this event is highly dependent on weather conditions, it may be postponed in the event of bad weather.
The event takes place at Mt. Ohira (Ogiyama). From nearby observation decks and elevated areas, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the fire spreading across the mountain alongside the night views of Beppu Bay and the city.
