The Oda Torou Matsuri, held in the Oda district of Uchiko, Ehime Prefecture, is a quintessential summer tradition. The sight of countless lanterns floating down the river creates a deeply emotional and serene atmosphere. As the lights drift through the darkness, visitors are transported into a dreamlike, mystical world. This is a warm, community-focused festival where local culture, food, and music come together.
The most breathtaking moment is the "Torou Nagashi" (floating lantern ceremony) near the Meiji Bridge. The sight of hundreds of glowing lanterns drifting on the water is a truly transcendent experience. Beyond the lights, the venue hosts stage performances by local students and groups, offering a chance to experience Japanese culture through Wadaiko drumming, brass bands, and traditional Kyogen theater. You can also immerse yourself in the festive spirit at the "Yatai Village," a collection of food stalls serving local delicacies and refreshing drinks.
The event is scheduled for July 25, 2026. While the festivities typically run from evening through the night, the main highlight—the floating lantern ceremony—is expected to begin around 20:00. Please note that if you wish to participate in the lantern floating, prior registration may be required.
The main event takes place at the plaza in front of the Uchiko Town Hall Oda Branch and along the riverbanks near Meiji Bridge. The surrounding area will be filled with various food stalls offering local specialties.
To catch the most spectacular part of the evening, we recommend timing your arrival to be ready for the lantern floating around 20:00. The stage performances offer a wonderful blend of traditional Japanese sounds and modern music. Since there will be many delicious food stalls, we suggest arriving with an appetite to enjoy the local street food!
As this is an outdoor event held at night, please dress in layers to stay comfortable as the temperature drops near the river. We recommend bringing a light jacket or shawl.
