The Niiname-sai is one of Japan's most significant annual rituals, held at the Imperial Court and Shinto shrines nationwide. Kashihara Jingu, located in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, enshrines Emperor Jimmu and Empress Jingu. This festival serves to express gratitude for the year's harvest and pray for national peace. A central part of the ritual involves offering new grain (Kakechikara) on green bamboo stalks, offering a profound-insight into Japan's traditional agricultural spirit and spiritual culture.
The absolute highlight is the performance of the Kume-mai, a traditional dance deeply connected to Emperor Jimmu. Four dancers perform to the sounds of ancient instruments like the Ryuteki flute, Hichiriki, and Wako, creating a powerful and majestic atmosphere—especially during the striking sword-swinging movements. This is a form of 'Kofū Kabu' (ancient court dance), a rare cultural heritage that can only be seen at very specific locations like the Imperial Court or Kashihara Jingu.
During the festival, you can also enjoy the sight of golden rice stalks being offered, reflecting the beauty of the season. The vast shrine grounds feature photogenic spots such as the Nan-shinmon Gate, the Outer Worship Hall, and the beautiful Fukata Pond. It is a perfect space where historical architecture and nature harmonize, allowing you to touch the depths of Japanese spirituality.
The event will be held on November 23, 2026. As a solemn ritual to thank the gods for the harvest, the atmosphere is highly dignified. The main proceedings typically include the offering of new grain at the Shinsenden field, followed by the ritualistic Kume-mai dance.
