Event Overview

The Nanbu Himatsuri is a traditional fire festival held in Nanbu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, during the Obon season. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Fuji River, the festival features dynamic rituals involving fire. The most striking elements include the 'Nagei Matsutai' (torch throwing) and the lighting of the '108 Tai'—ritual fires intended to comfort the spirits of the deceased or ward off evil. This creates a mystical landscape of light and flame.

The core of this festival is the dramatic use of fire. The 'Nagei Matsutai' involves throwing torches toward a target high up on a pole, creating a powerful spectacle. Another highlight is the 'Dai Matsutai' (Great Torch), a massive structure over 6 meters tall built from thousands of wooden slats, which is ignited by local students to pierce the darkness.

Additionally, the sight of 108 ritual fires (108 Tai) being lit simultaneously along both banks of the Fuji River at 8:00 PM is truly overwhelming. The night concludes with a 3,000-shot firework display, blending ancient fire rituals with modern pyrotechnics for an unforgettable summer night.

• *Around 7:00 PM**: The 'Dai Matsutai' (over 6m tall) is ignited amidst Buddhist chanting.
• *8:00 PM**: The 108 'Tai' fires along both sides of the Fuji River are lit following a siren signal.
• *After the 108 Tai lighting**: 3,000 fireworks will be launched.

Venue & Access

The festival covers the area along the Fuji River in Nanbu Town. The main areas are divided into the Sakae side (2 min walk from Uchifune Station) and the Mutai side (10 min walk from Uchifune Station).

• *By Train**: The nearest station is Uchifune Station on the JR Minobu Line. Special extra trains and increased services are expected between Fuji and Uchifune stations. Please check the JR Central official website for details.
• *By Car**: Follow signs for Route 52 or the Yamanashi Prefectural Fuji-Minobu line. Due to traffic restrictions near the Mutai side, please use designated parking areas near Uchifune Station or the riverbed. Note that the parking near Uchifune Station will be paid on the event day.

For the best views of the torch throwing and fireworks, climb the river embankments. You can also enjoy classic Japanese street food like yakisoba and takoyaki at the food stalls in the main area. As the scale of festivities can vary, it is wise to check local updates beforehand.
