Event Overview

The Nanao Gion Festival is a historic summer celebration dedicated to the Daijishu Shrine in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Held annually on the second Saturday of July, it is a cornerstone of the Noto region's famous "Kiriko Festivals." This event is officially recognized as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was designated as a "Japan Heritage" site in 2015. During the festival, local residents carry 11 massive lanterns known as "Kiriko" through the streets. The most striking sight is the "Dai-Kiriko," which stands approximately 12 meters tall and weighs about 1 ton, symbolizing the powerful and resilient culture of the Noto Peninsula.

The true magic happens at night, when the massive Kiriko lanterns illuminate the darkness. The front of the lanterns features bold calligraphy, while the back is adorned with fierce warrior illustrations. As the lanterns glow, they create a mystical atmosphere. Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of drums, flutes, and bells, the participants shout energetic chants like "Sakkasai, Sakasassai!" while dancing and swaying the heavy lanterns. Schedule

The festival will be held on July 10, 2027. The typical flow of the evening is as follows:

• *Around 17:30**: The Kiriko lanterns depart from the port town toward the temporary shrine area.
• *Around 20:30**: A lively dance of all 11 Kiriko lanterns takes place in the plaza in front of the temporary shrine.
• *Around 21:30**: After the purification ritual, the lanterns depart for the Daijishu Shrine alongside the portable shrine.
• *Around 23:30**: A final, powerful dance occurs within the Daijishu Shrine grounds before the lanterns return to their neighborhoods.
