Ritual of Yabusame (Horseback Archery) at Naemura Shrine

Event Overview

Located in Ryuo Town, Shiga Prefecture, the Naemura Shrine Ritual is a traditional festival held annually on May 5th. This historic event features 'Yabusame' (horseback archery) performed on a 200m special track in front of the shrine's gate, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Following the archery, the 'Uma-kake' ritual takes place, showcasing the deep bond between Japanese tradition and the power of the horse.

Powerful Yabusame (Horseback Archery)

In this high-speed display, archers ride through a 200m straight track, aiming at two targets while galloping. The archers attempt to hit a total of six targets across three runs, creating an intense and breathtaking spectacle. You can also observe the traditional attire, including ceremonial hats (Jingasa) and formal robes (Kamishimo), which add to the historical atmosphere. The track is divided by partitions known as 'Orachi' and 'Merachi'.

'Uma-kake' for Good Health and Longevity

Following the Yabusame, the 'Uma-kake' ritual begins. Seven horses gallop through the track approximately four times. Attached to bamboo sticks are fans decorated with the rising sun motif. At the end of the ritual, a lively competition ensues to grab these fans. It is believed that obtaining one of these fans brings good health and protection from illness for the entire year.

• From the North Exit of JR Omi-Hachiman Station, take the Ohmi Railway/Kokoku Bus (Hachiman Outlet Line) and get off at 'Ayato-kita' stop.

Due to the high speed of the horses and the intensity of the movement, please ensure you watch from the designated safe viewing areas. The 'Uma-kake' segment is particularly energetic as people vie for the ceremonial fans. It is a rare opportunity to experience both the elegance of Japanese ritual and the raw power of the horses.
