Event Overview

The Naofu Grand Festival is a traditional summer celebration held annually on July 31st and August 1st in Naofu, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The highlight of this festival is the 'Kaijo-togi' (Sea Procession), where a portable shrine (mikoshi) is carried across the water toward a sacred torii gate standing in the ocean. The festival also features the performance of the Gojinjo Taiko, a designated intangible folk cultural property of Ishikawa Prefecture, allowing visitors to deeply connect with the history and spirit of the Noto Peninsula.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The most spectacular moment is the movement of the mikoshi toward the sea-standing torii gate. During the main festival on the second day, the sight of the shrine being placed on a boat and sent toward the sacred gate is truly awe-inspiring.

Additionally, the Gojinjo Taiko performance is a must-see. Based on a legend from 1577 where warriors used strange masks and loud drumming to deceive enemies, the performers wear striking, unique masks that create a powerful and mysterious atmosphere. The rhythmic, thunderous sounds of the drums are a testament to the enduring traditions of the local community.

From Kanazawa: Approximately 2 hours 20 minutes via the Noto Satoyama Kaido.
From the Noto Mitsui IC: Approximately 30 minutes via Route 249.

From Kanazawa Station: Take the Wajima Express Bus for approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to the 'Wajima Ekimae' stop.
From Wajima Ekimae, transfer to the local bus (Mano Line) and get off at the 'Naofu' stop.

Tips for Visitors

You can enjoy the main sea procession and the Gojinjo Taiko performance from the coastline or the shrine plaza. The Eve Festival at night is particularly magical, as the glowing lanterns and Kiriko illuminate the dark sea and coast, creating a mystical atmosphere.

As the event is held outdoors along the coast and near the shrine, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. If attending the Eve Festival, be prepared for temperature changes at night.
