Mizuwakasunomiya Shrine Festival is a prestigious traditional ritual held at Mizuwakasunomiya Shrine, the most important shrine in Oki Town, Shimane Prefecture. This festival is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shimane. It takes place on May 3rd during even-numbered years (such as 2026, 2028, etc.) to coincide with the Grand Festival. A highlight of the event is the 'Yamahiki' parade, where local youths pull beautifully decorated floats called 'Horaisan'—adorned with cypress leaves and flowers—using two thick ropes, creating a truly iconic sight.
The main attraction is the series of sacred rituals that preserve ancient Japanese customs. Watching the local boys, dressed in traditional attire with hachimaki headbands, energetically pulling the heavy floats, offers a heartwarming glimpse into the community's spirit.
