The Minami Shrine Annual Festival (Mikoshi-makuri) held in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture, is a powerful ritual with roots dating back to the early Heian period. The ceremony commemorates a legendary feat where the deity was brought to Kiso to protect it from the wars near Hida Ichinomiya. The most striking feature is the 'Mikoshi-makuri' ritual, where a massive white wood shrine weighing approximately 400kg is intentionally rolled and dropped to be broken in a single night—a rare and dramatic tradition found nowhere else in Japan.
The absolute highlight is the sheer intensity of the 'Mikoshi-makuri.' As the crowd shouts powerful chants like 'Sosuke!
