The Miwasaki Hachiman Jinja Festival is a traditional ritual held annually in the Miwasaki district of Shingu, Wakayama. This area is a historic fishing port, and the festival is a vital event to pray for protection of the sea, bountiful harvests, and prosperity. It is a high-energy celebration that preserves the ancient culture of traditional whaling.
The main attraction is the 'Kujira-odori' (Whale Dance), designated as a Japan Heritage and a Wakayama Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The dance mimics the movements of hunting whales through two distinct styles: 'Tonchu-odori,' which depicts casting nets to corner a whale, and 'Aya-odori,' which portrays the striking of a whale with a harpoon. The dancers wear striking white costumes decorated with red, black, and green patterns, symbolizing the sea. The sight of the portable shrines (Mikoshi) and floats parading through the streets adds to the intense, festive atmosphere.

The main 'Kujira-odori' performance is typically scheduled around 14:00–15:00, following the sacred Shinto rituals to pray for a great catch.
