Mihara Yassa Matsuri is a historic summer festival deeply rooted in Mihara City, Hiroshima. Its origins date back to 1567, celebrating the construction of Mihara Castle by the warlord Kobayakawa Takakage. Since the first official festival in 1976, it has become a beloved local tradition. The area around JR Mihara Station comes alive with the energetic sounds of shamisen, flutes, and taiko drums, accompanied by the spirited shouts of "Yassa, Yassa!"
The main attraction is the "Yassa Dance." On Friday and Saturday evenings, approximately 7,000 dancers from about 110 teams parade through the streets near the station. You can witness everything from traditional "Seicho Yassa" to modern creative dance styles. On Sunday night, the excitement peaks with the "Yassa Fireworks Festa," featuring powerful 2-shaku shells launched from Itozaki Pier. Don't forget to visit the food stalls to enjoy classic festival treats like yakisoba, shaved ice, and goldfish scooping to fully immerse yourself in the Japanese summer atmosphere.
The festival takes place over three days in August, including the second Sunday of the month. In 2026, it will be held on August 7th.
The main festivities take place around JR Mihara Station. The parade follows routes in the station vicinity, while the fireworks are launched from Itozaki Pier.

During the festival, a "Yassa Food Stall Village" is set up near the station. You can enjoy a variety of Japanese summer staples like yakisoba and shaved ice. We recommend experiencing the culture with all your senses—not just by watching the dancers, but by enjoying the food and traditional games like goldfish scooping. The festival is also broadcast locally on Mihara Television.
