Event Overview

Located in Matsumae, the southernmost town of Hokkaido, the 'Matsumae Sakura Festival' is a spectacular spring celebration. The event showcases the breathtaking contrast between the white walls of the historic Matsumae Castle (Fukuyama Castle) and the vibrant colors of the cherry blossoms. With approximately 10,000 trees across 250 species blooming in a 'relay' fashion from early to late bloomers, you can enjoy a constantly changing landscape of beauty throughout the festival period.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

Castle Walls and Cherry Blossom Contrast

The sight of cherry blossoms against the white walls of Matsumae Castle is a favorite for photographers. For the best shots, aim for around 10:00 AM when the sunlight is bright, or during the 'magic hour' of evening when the details of the blossoms are most striking.

Special Night-time LED Illumination

From sunset until approximately 9:00 PM, the area is illuminated by specialized 'Sakura LEDs' designed to enhance the natural pink hues of the flowers. The harmony of the illuminated blossoms, stone walls, and the castle creates a mystical atmosphere quite different from the daytime.

Seasonal Gourmet Under the Blossoms

Near the area behind Matsumae Shrine, you will find the 'Ohanami Food Stalls.' Enjoy fresh Hokkaido delicacies such as grilled seafood (oysters, scallops, squid, crab, etc.), Genghis Khan (grilled mutton), and the beloved local seaweed bento. We highly recommend renting a Genghis Khan set to enjoy a barbecue right under the cherry trees.

The festival runs for 23 days from April 18 (Sat) to May 10 (Sun).

• *April 18 (Sat) – April 29 (Tue/Holiday):** Opening ceremony, Kiyobe Kagura dance, calligraphy performances, and traditional local arts.
• *May 2 (Sat) – May 9 (Sat):** Matsumae Souvenir Market, Ninja experiences, Taiko drum performances, Hot air balloon experiences (paid), and late-blooming cherry blossom viewing.

Access

• *By Car:** Approximately 2 hours from the Hakodate area via Route 228. For the return trip, we recommend the coastal route via Esashi and Kamino-kuni to enjoy the scenic views.
• *By Public Transport:** The starting point is JR Kikuna Station. From there, take the Hakodate Bus (bound for Matsumae Branch Office) and get off at the 'Matsujo' bus stop. The venue is about a 7-minute walk from the stop.

Tips for Visitors

Parking & Crowds

Due to traffic restrictions during the festival, you cannot park directly next to the park. Please use the paid parking lots (capacity approx. 500 cars) or the temporary parking areas in town (such as Matsumae Municipal Matsujo Elementary School). Crowds peak between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM during Golden Week, so we recommend arriving early in the morning or visiting during the evening light-up.

Exploring Famous Trees

For a more expert experience, venture beyond the castle walls to find the 'Three Great Famous Trees.' Look for the 300-year-old 'Kosenji Bloodline Sakura' or the 'Meoto Sakura' (Couple Sakura), where two different colors bloom on a single trunk.
