Event Overview

Marugame Basara Festival is a high-energy summer event created to revitalize the city of Marugame. The term 'Basara' represents a free-spirited, unconventional, and bold way of life. In this spirit, the festival showcases dynamic dance performances that break away from traditional constraints.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the fusion of the rhythmic 'Basara Dance' and a spectacular fireworks display. Over 100 dance teams perform across two main areas divided into North and South stages. The fireworks are launched from the sea, creating a breathtaking effect as the light reflects off the water, painting the sky in gold. You can also enjoy local street food, such as Jumbo Franks and grilled meat skewers, from the many food stalls around the venue.

Schedule

The main event takes place on August 24. The schedule is as follows:

  • *Dance Program**: 11:00–20:24 (North and South venues)
  • *Fireworks Display**: 20:15–21:00

Venue & Access

The venue is split into two areas: North (Mimoka, Hamacho Shopping Street, Minato Park) and South (Omotecho BASARA Plaza, Omotecho West, and Street venues).

  • *By Train**: Approximately a 3-minute walk from JR Marugame Station.
  • *By Car**:
  • From Okayama: Approx. 20 mins via Setouchi Central Expressway (Sakaisu Kita IC) to Marugame Boat Race Track.
  • From Matsuyama/Tokushima: Approx. 15 mins via Takamatsu Expressway (Sakaide IC) to Marugame Boat Race Track.
  • *Parking**: Free parking is available at Marugame Boat Race Track (approx. 2,200 spaces) and Marugame West Junior High School. We recommend arriving early due to expected congestion.

Tips for Visitors

The North and South areas offer different atmospheres for enjoying the dance. For a close-up view of the fireworks, the waterfront area is ideal, but it gets very crowded, so arrive early to secure a spot. Alternatively, viewing from the Marugame Castle side offers a more relaxed way to enjoy the scenery alongside sightseeing.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is an outdoor event lasting many hours, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. It is helpful to carry small change for the food stalls. Please check the official website for specific payment methods or reservation requirements.
