The Kushi Matsuri (Comb Festival) held at Yasui Konpiragu is a sacred ritual to offer gratitude and purification to old combs and hairpins. Based on the tradition of the 'Kushi-zuka' (Comb Mound) established in 1961, this ceremony honors the tools that enhance the beauty of hair, which is considered a vital part of a woman's essence. The festival is also known for bringing blessings for beauty, facial aesthetics, and hair health. It is a rare opportunity to witness traditional culture at Yasui Konpiragu, a shrine famous for its unique spiritual energy and its reputation as a 'connection-breaking' shrine.
The main highlight is the 'Jidai Fuzoku Gyoretsu' (Historical Costume Parade). Women dressed in exquisite traditional attire, showcasing hairstyles ranging from the Kofun period to modern-day Maiko styles, parade through the atmospheric streets of Giken. These looks are meticulously recreated with the help of the Kyoto Beauty Culture Club, making it a breathtaking spectacle often called the 'Women's Jidai Matsuri.' Additionally, the solemn dance 'Kurokami' performed at the shrine and the ritual of offering combs to the mound create a serene and dignified atmosphere that captivates all visitors.

The event takes place at Yasui Konpiragu in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. While access is convenient, please expect heavy crowds on the day.
To enjoy the parade smoothly, it is helpful to know the route in advance. The procession moves through the beautiful streets of Gion, offering many vantage points. You can experience the contrast between the solemn ritual inside the shrine and the vibrant, colorful parade outside. Please note that the parade may be canceled in the event of rain, so keep an eye on the weather.
Admission is free. As the event involves much walking and outdoor viewing, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Please be mindful of other visitors and local pedestrians due to the crowds.
