Kuse Matsuri is a traditional festival held in the Kuse district of Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the three great Danjiri festivals of the region. With a history dating back to the Genroku era, the festival builds excitement over three days: the Yoimatsuri (Eve Festival) on October 24, the Honmatsuri (Main Festival) on the 25th, and the Atomatsuri (Closing Festival) on the 26th.
The main attraction is the dynamic 'Danjiri Kenka' (float fighting). The rear of each float is reinforced with iron plates, allowing them to collide violently under the force of dozens of people. This intense impact can even create sparks, driving the crowd into a frenzy.
During the daytime 'Osairei' ceremony, young men perform 'Sasa Kenka,' where they break off bamboo branches from the floats to hold high, accompanied by energetic shouts of 'Oisa! Oisa!' The combination of traditional music and the raw energy of the local community makes for an unforgettable experience.
