Event Overview

Kuroishi-ji Somin Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at the ancient Kuroishi-ji Temple in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, with a history spanning over 1,000 years. It is recognized as one of Japan's three most eccentric festivals (or three most famous naked festivals) and is designated as a National Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The ritual has been preserved to drive away misfortune and pray for a bountiful harvest. The sight of men performing these rituals through the freezing night creates a powerful and lasting impression.

The main spectacle is the procession of men carrying torches (Shitobuki) that illuminate the dark night, leading to the climax: the 'Somin-bukuro' (sacred bag) battle. The intensity peaks from midnight toward dawn, following the sound of the temple bell at 10:00 PM. The sight of men competing fiercely for small wooden charms inside hemp bags is the very definition of a 'festival of men and fire.' You can witness the traditional ritual where the person who secures the final piece becomes the 'Torinushi,' predicting the year's harvest.

Participation Points

This is a strict religious ritual rather than a simple event. Participants are expected to follow certain spiritual disciplines, such as 'Shojin Kisai' (abstaining from meat, fish, garlic, and leeks). While visitors can participate by registering at the temple grounds, it is vital to respect the sacred nature of the ceremony. Note that traditional requirements for attire have changed in recent years.
