The Kurashiki Byobu Matsuri is a traditional festival held in the Honmachi, Higashimachi, and the surrounding Bikan Historical Quarter of Kurashiki, Okayama. Historically, the festivities of Achi Shrine were known as the 'Byobu Matsuri,' where local families would remove their wooden lattice doors to display precious folding screens and seasonal floral arrangements to welcome guests. This beautiful custom continues today, embodying the spirit of 'Fueki Ryuko'—preserving tradition while embracing change. The event is also recognized as part of the Japan Heritage site, 'A Story of Kurashiki: From a Single Cotton Boll to a Textile Town,' offering a rare glimpse into the refined aesthetics of Japanese history.
The main attraction is the collection of approximately 35 households and shops that display magnificent folding screens and precious family heirlooms at their entrances. From golden screens to delicate landscape paintings, these treasures, paired with seasonal decorations, create a nostalgic atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. As the traditional lattice doors are opened, you can experience the sophisticated 'Iki' (refined elegance) of Japanese culture while strolling through the historic streets.
