The Kumagaya Fireworks Festival is a deeply rooted local tradition held along the Arakawa River in Kumagaya City, Saitama. Originating in 1948 as a symbol of reconstruction following the Kumagaya Air Raid, it has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious displays in the prefecture. With approximately 10,000 fireworks launched, it is a quintessential summer event that draws massive crowds to witness the beauty of the night sky.
The main attraction is the 'Star Mine Competition,' where pyrotechnicians showcase elite technical skills through dazzling, rapid-fire sequences. You can also enjoy the powerful 'Wide Star Mine' and the traditional 'Nishakudama' (large-caliber shells). A unique feature is the 'Message Fireworks,' where community members and businesses share heartfelt messages through light. In recent years, the festival has embraced innovation, often featuring a modern drone show at the beginning of the program, blending tradition with cutting than technology.
The festival is held on August 13. The fireworks are scheduled to launch from 19:00 to 21:00. Please note that the schedule may change due to weather or typhoons; typically, events are postponed to the following day or week in case of rain.
The viewing area is the Arakawa Riverbed (located below the Kumagaya Sakurazutsumi/Arakawa Green Space), situated downstream from the Arakawa Bridge. The launch site is on the opposite bank.
Due to the massive crowds, preparation is key. To avoid the heaviest congestion, arrive early or consider booking a reserved seat. Always check the official website for the latest updates on traffic regulations, bus route changes, and special train schedules.
Since you will be watching from a riverbed, bring a leisure sheet (picnic mat) to sit on and clothing suitable for cooler evening temperatures. Expect heavy crowds, and be aware that entry restrictions may be implemented near station gates. Most parking is paid, so carrying cash is recommended.
