Event Overview

Kuki Chochin Matsuri (also known as Kuki Chochin Matsuri "Tenno-sama") is a deeply rooted traditional festival boasting over 230 years of history. Held twice a year on July 12th and July 18th, the festivities take place around the West Exit of Kuki Station. The most striking feature is the dramatic transformation of the floats between day and night, creating a mystical atmosphere that brings ancient myths to life.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The greatest charm of this festival lies in the metamorphosis of the 'Dashi' (floats). During the day, the floats are elaborately decorated with figures from Japanese mythology and legends, parading through the streets with great power. These figures are precious cultural treasures that carry the weight of history.

As dusk falls, the festival reaches its climax. The mythical figures are removed, and approximately 500 lanterns (chochin) are attached to the four sides of the floats. The floats transform into glowing 'Chochin Dashi.' Watching these illuminated floats parade through the night streets is a truly breathtaking sight. It is a beautiful scene of Japanese summer, where the magical light of the lanterns meets the vibrant energy of the crowd.

The event takes place in the area around the West Exit of Kuki Station.

• *Nearest Station**: Descend at the West Exit of Kuki Station (JR Utsunomiya Line / Tobu Isesaki Line).
• *By Car**: Approximately 10 minutes from the Kuki IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
• *Parking**: Please note that traffic restrictions will be in place. Paid parking is available around the East Exit of JR Kuki Station.

Tips for Visitors

This is a dynamic event where historical floats parade through the streets. The night-time lantern floats are perfect for photography, but expect heavy crowds; please be mindful of others' movement. As the night parade involves walking in dark areas, please watch your step.

What to Bring and Etiquette

If you plan to enjoy the night parade, we recommend clothing suitable for the evening temperature and comfortable walking shoes. Since traffic restrictions will be in place, using public transport (JR or Tobu lines) is highly convenient.
