The Kinefuri Hanamat Matsuri (Kinefuri Matsuri) is a historic traditional event preserved in the Hirukawa district of Nakatsugawa City. It is a significant ritual dedicated to the Abiro Kami Shrine, cherished by the local community for generations. The highlight of this festival is the 'Kinefuri Odori' (Kinefuri Dance), which boasts a history of several hundred years. Dancers adorned in vibrant red, yellow, and blue robes and traditional hats perform to rhythmic music, creating a visually stunning spectacle. Originally a ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest, the movements involving mortars and pestles symbolize the community's prayers for prosperity.
The most captivating moments are the colorful Kinefuri dance and the dramatic 'O-shishi no Doiri' (the entrance of the Great Lion). A procession of approximately 150 participants, including children, demons, Tengu, Okame, Hyottoko, and the Great Lion, marches through the streets. A particularly thrilling moment is when the sacred horses (Shinme) and flower horses gallop powerfully up the stone steps, bringing the festival's energy to its peak. The Shishimai (lion dance) performed within the shrine grounds is also a masterpiece of traditional technique and strength. Surrounded by the natural beauty of a mountain village, you can truly feel the essence of Japanese spiritual culture through the sounds of traditional music.

The festival takes place along the route from Ebisu-za in the Hirukawa district to Abiro Kami Shrine, and within the shrine precincts.
The procession travels approximately 2 kilometers from Ebisu-za to the shrine. We recommend choosing a viewing spot by checking the terrain and stone steps in advance to catch the procession as it passes.
Since the procession moves through the area, you can enjoy watching it from the starting point near Ebisu-za, or head to the destination, Abiro Kami Shrine, to witness the grand finale. The 'O-shishi no Doiri' and the sacred horses ascending the steps at the shrine are the most exciting parts, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture while enjoying the traditional musical melodies.
