The Kawarayu Onsen Yukake Matsuri is a traditional ritual held every year on the morning of January 20th (the day of Daikan) in Kawarayu Onsen, Gunma Prefecture. Its origins date back approximately 400 years as a ritual to celebrate the resurgence of the hot springs. The sight of young men in traditional fundoshi loincloths splashing hot spring water against one another in front of the 'Oyu' public bath is incredibly heroic and is known as a 'strange festival' (ki-sai) that breaks the winter silence.
The greatest charm is the clash of hot spring water amidst the extreme cold. The intensity of participants divided into red and white teams splashing hot water, combined with the beautiful rising steam, creates a unique spectacle found only during this season. The ritualistic ceremonies and traditional performances are also major highlights. We invite you to experience the vibrant energy of the hot spring town enveloped in heat and steam.
The festival is held in the early morning of January 20th every year. In 2026, it is scheduled for January 20th (Tuesday).
The venue is in front of 'Oyu,' the symbol of Kawarayu Onsen.
It is approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Agatsuma Line 'Kawarayu Onsen Station.' However, since the festival starts very early (after 5:00 AM), public transport may not arrive in time. We strongly recommend staying at a local inn the night before and walking to the venue.
It is approximately 60 minutes (40 km) from the Kan-etsu Expressway 'Shibukawa-Ikaho IC.' As Oyu has no dedicated parking, please use the following free parking lots:
Preparation is vital for a good experience. The festival takes place in extreme cold before sunrise.
Prepare thoroughly for the extreme cold and the possibility of being splashed with hot water.
