Gion Kashiwazaki Matsuri is a traditional summer festival held annually in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, from July 24th to 26th. The grand climax of this festival is the 'Umi-no-Dai Hanabi Taikai' (Great Sea Fireworks Display) held on the final day, July 26th. Originating from the 'Gion Festival Smoke Fireworks' of the Edo period, this historic event carries deep-rooted prayers for regional peace and remembrance. As one of the three great fireworks displays of the Echigo region, it attracts countless visitors every year.
The absolute highlight is the dynamic series of fireworks launched directly from the sea. The scale is truly breathtaking, featuring displays such as 100 large-caliber shells launched simultaneously across a 1,500-meter scale, 300 consecutive shell bursts, and simultaneous launches of three large-caliber shells on the water. Beyond the fireworks, the entire city vibrates with energy during the festival period with traditional folk music street parades, powerful 'Taru Niwaka' performances, and lively parades of floats and portable shrines.
