Kakudate Festival

Event Overview

The Kakudate Festival is a sacred ritual for Shinmei Shrine and Jojuin Yakushido in the Kakudate region of Senboku, Akita. Held annually from September 7 to September 9, it is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful samurai residences that once served as a castle town for the Satake clan, magnificent 'Hikiyama' (ornate floats) parade through the streets. This event is not just a spectacle but a vital way to pass down the history and culture of the region to future generations.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The greatest highlight is the movement of the 'Hikiyama' floats, which weigh approximately 3 tons. These heavy, wooden structures are adorned with exquisite carvings and lifelike figures depicting Kabuki scenes and historical figures. A thrilling climax occurs during the 'Yamabutsuke' (float collision), where the massive floats face off and sometimes collide with great force. On the second day (September 8), you may even witness a 'demonstration collision' specifically for spectators to experience the intense energy of the festival.

As the floats move, you will hear the rhythmic sounds of 'Oyama-bayashi' played on bamboo flutes, large drums, and shamisen. The graceful 'Te-odori' (hand dance) performed by dancers in traditional attire adds a touch of elegant beauty to the powerful movement of the festival.
