Kaihisai Festival (Tsushima Shrine)

Event Overview

Kaihisai is one of the most significant festivals at Tsushima Shrine, also known as "Omito." This historic event has been celebrated since the Edo period as a ritual to herald the arrival of spring. The highlight is the use of "O-taimochi," massive torches measuring approximately 1 meter in diameter and 10 meters in length. Designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Tsushima City, this event symbolizes the rich history and culture of the region.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The most striking sight is the overwhelming presence of the giant torches emerging from the darkness. Two massive torches, carried by 25 people, move from the Higashi Otorii Gate toward the shrine grounds. The sight of blazing flames illuminating the night sky and sparks dancing in the air is truly spectacular. The torches are made from "Yoshi" (reeds) unique to this water region, reflecting the local landscape.

Schedule

The festival is held annually on February 1st of the lunar calendar. Please note that the schedule may vary, so please check for the latest updates.

• *19:30**: The torches are lit in front of the Shamusho (Shrine Office) and moved to the Higashi Otorii Gate.
• *20:00**: The two torches move from the Higashi Otorii Gate into the eastern shrine grounds, passing through the Soribashi bridge and the Romon gate.
• *During the Ceremony**: While the Shinto ritual is performed at the Haiden (Main Hall), the torches are lowered and burned.

Participation Tips

There is a tradition of collecting the remaining "Yoshi" (reeds) after the fire. These reeds are believed to offer protection against wind-related ailments, toothaches, and general misfortune. To experience the intense heat and energy of the ritual up close, we recommend arriving at the venue early.

What to Bring & Etiquette
