Iwase Ikayama Festival

Event Overview

The Iwase Ikama Festival is the annual spring ritual of the Iwase Suwa Shrine, held every May 17th and 18th in the Iwase (Higashi-Iwase) district of Toyama City. Often called the 'Iwase Kenka Yama' (Iwase Fighting Floats), this festival is a beloved traditional celebration of the region. Its history dates back to around 1796, when 'Tatemon' (illuminated lanterns) began being mounted on the floats. Today, 11 magnificent floats carry the spirit and energy of the local community.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Hikiai' (the clash) that takes place at night. As the darkness falls, the floats, adorned with glowing 'Tatemon' lanterns, advance through the streets to spirited shouts. The spectacle reaches its peak when the two sides—the Omotokata and Urakata—charge toward each other, attempting to push the opposing float back through sheer force and momentum. The thunderous sound of the collision, the intense energy of the crowd, and the sight of the illuminated floats against the night sky create a breathtaking, high-octane atmosphere that feels truly otherworldly.

The festival takes place over two days, May 17th and 18th.

• *May 17th**: Around 20:00, the procession begins from Korahisha, moving through the main Iwase streets (Omachi and Shinmachi streets). The intense 'Hikiai' clash occurs in front of the Iwase Suwa Shrine.
• *May 18th**: The 'Hikiai' clash is held near the Choreito monument (near Iwase Elementary School) starting around 21:30–22:00.
