The Iwai River Fireworks Display is a historic event that kicks off the first day of the Ichinoseki Summer Festival in Iwate Prefecture. Approximately 10,000 fireworks will be launched over the Iwai River, creating a breathtaking spectacle. This event is a perfect way to experience the deep summer atmosphere of Ichinoseki, characterized by beautiful Tanabata decorations and a lively local spirit.
The main attraction is the 75-minute fireworks show featuring about 10,000 shells, including powerful star mines that will leave you breathless. As you walk toward the venue, you will see large, colorful Tanabata decorations and streets illuminated by traditional lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. Enjoying local street food while looking up at the night sky is a quintessential Japanese summer experience.
The event takes place on August 7th, marking the start of the Ichinoseki Summer Festival (August 7th–9th). The fireworks are scheduled to launch from 19:15 to 20:30. We recommend arriving early to enjoy the festive atmosphere before the main show begins.
The venue is the Iwai River Riverside Park (near Iwai Bridge). It is very accessible via a 10-minute walk from JR Ichinoseki Station, making train travel highly convenient. If driving, it is about 10 minutes from the Ichinoseki IC on the Tohoku Expressway. Please note that traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue from 18:00 to 21:30 on the day of the event.
The riverside venue offers a close-up, high-impact view of the fireworks. To fully enjoy the festival, we suggest exploring the food stalls in the shopping district leading from the station to the venue. Be aware that the area around the station becomes extremely crowded immediately after the fireworks end; we highly recommend preparing your return travel in advance.
As the event takes place at a riverside at night, please dress according to the temperature. Since many food stalls rely on cash, having coins or small bills ready will make your experience smoother. There are no reserved paid seating areas. If you are traveling with a stroller, it is best to move early to avoid the densest crowds or use a baby carrier for comfort.
