The Hojo Sekku Matsuri, centered around Sumiyoshi Shrine in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a magnificent spring festival known for its blend of elegance and power. As one of the three great festivals of the Harima region, it boasts a long-standing history and deep-rooted traditions. Visitors will be captivated by the sight of exquisitely decorated 'Kesho Yatai' (ornate floats) and the energetic procession of Mikoshi (portable shrines) carrying the deities, accompanied by solemn and beautiful Shinto rituals.
The true charm of this festival lies in the breathtaking beauty of the ornate floats and shrines. Watching the highly detailed Keshoyatai parade through the streets toward the shrine is a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. Beyond the floats, you can enjoy high-level traditional performing arts such as the 'Ryuo-mai' (Dragon King Dance), the historic 'Tori-awase', and the graceful 'Urashu-no-mai'. Experience the vibrant energy of the local community and the refined beauty of traditional Japanese performing arts amidst the arrival of spring.
The festival will be held on April 4, 2027.
The event takes place in the old town area surrounding Sumiyoshi Shrine.

To witness the highlights, such as the arrival of the floats at the shrine or the movement of the Mikoshi, it is best to stay near the Sumiyoshi Shrine area. The atmosphere becomes incredibly lively as the floats gather at the shrine. Since traditional rituals like the Ryuo-mai are performed at specific times near the shrine, we recommend checking the schedule in advance and wearing comfortable clothing to move easily through the crowds.
