Event Overview

The Hirosaki Neputa Festival is a prestigious traditional event held in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, and is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It is celebrated as one of the 'Four Great Festivals of Hirosaki,' alongside the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom, Chrysanthemum & Autumn Leaves, and Snow Lantern festivals. The highlight is the magnificent 'Ogi-Neputa' (fan-shaped) and 'Kumi-Neputa' (figure-shaped) floats, which feature intricate warrior paintings. As the rhythmic 'Ya-ya-do' chants echo through the air, local residents pull these massive, glowing floats through the streets. Historically, this festival was held to drive away the drowsiness of summer farm work and to ward off bad luck.

The true magic of this festival lies in the sight of the colorful, illuminated lanterns floating through the dark streets. During the festival period, the entire city is filled with excitement as approximately 80 floats parade through the area. The large, fan-shaped floats with detailed warrior art are particularly captivating due to their sheer scale and artistic beauty. Don't miss the 'Neputa Hayashi'—the energetic performance of drums and flutes that creates a powerful, rhythmic atmosphere. Schedule

The festival takes place annually for seven days from August 1st to August 7th. Please note that the parade routes and times vary depending on the date.

• *August 1st–4th**: Dotemachi Course (Parade starts around 7:00 PM)
• *August 5th–6th**: Ekimae (Station Front) Course (Parade starts around 7:00 PM)
• *August 7th (Final Day)**: Known as 'Nanukabi,' the parade begins around 10:00 AM on the Dotemachi Course. The festival concludes in the evening with the 'Nanukabi-okuri' at the Iwaki Riverbed.

Venue & Access

The main parades take place in the central areas of Hirosaki City (including Dotemachi, Ekimae, and Chuo-dori). Routes are designated based on the specific date.

• *Main Parade Areas**: Near Hirosaki City Hall, Hirosaki Station, Sakura-odori, Ichibancho, and Nakadotemachi.
• *Access**: The central area around Hirosaki Station is the primary venue. As traffic restrictions are likely during the festival, using public transportation is highly recommended.

To feel the power of the floats up close, the best way is to watch from the roadside along the parade routes. Since the routes change (such as the Dotemachi or Ekimae courses), we recommend checking the specific route in advance. Also, be aware that on the final day, August 7th, the parade starts in the morning, which is different from the evening-centric schedule of other days.
