The Hancho Daikoku Autumn Festival is a significant autumn ritual held at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. The festival honors the deity Hancho Daikoku (Okuninushi-no-Mikoto), enshrined at the Koto-sha shrine in front of the main hall. Known as the deity of prosperity, longevity, and business success, the deity's connection to the 'Hanmasu' (half-measure) vessel symbolizes abundant fortune and happiness.
The highlight of this festival is the sacred performance of Gagaku (traditional court music) and ancient dances. Visitors can witness these elegant performances at the Hashidono area, feeling the profound spiritual atmosphere of the ritual up close. Complementing this serene experience is the lively energy of the festival grounds, where numerous food stalls (yatai) line the paths. The shrine grounds become very crowded during the festival. The areas near the Hashidono (where Gagaku is performed) and the food stall sections are particularly lively. When observing the sacred rituals, please maintain a respectful and calm attitude to honor the shrine's traditions.
